WHY READ BOOKS?
“I’ve always been a reader. I remember that my father used to take me to the library and it was always exciting- wondering what new adventure I would be reading next. I read books that fired my imagination, like Robinson Crusoe, Treasure Island and White Fang and I even remember getting in trouble for reading in bed with a torch, lest it strained my eyes!
In my teen years I was fascinated by military history and I read a lot of books about wars, battles and generals, like Napoleon and Wellington.
In my late teens I read romances and adventure novels, including all of the James Bond collection.
As I grew up, my interests changed and I began to focus on biographies – stories of how people’s overnight successes had in fact usually been a struggle. I read books about leadership and management and as my own career developed, I loved the case studies written by management consultants. I also became captivated by the study of human behaviour, by what motivates and inspires us.
The greatest gift my parents gave me was a wonderful education and with that a thirst for knowledge.
When you read a book, in the short time it takes you to read it, you are distilling the wisdom that it has taken the author their entire lifetime to learn – that is leverage on a powerful scale.”
Tony Inman
I hope you enjoy the following selection. I can’t say that I’ve read all of them entirely yet, but they are in my collection and I have read most of them. Enjoy!
