What is Neuro Linguistic Programming or Patterning (NLP) and what can it do for me?
Firstly, just what is NLP?
You may have read the book entitled ‘The Secret’ or watched the movie. Or perhaps you’ve heard about the ‘Law of Attraction’ or terms like ‘mental magnetism’.
If so, you’d know that we literally attract what we think about.
Even if you are sceptical about that, please read on…

If so, you’d know that :
‘Our verbal communication (language) actually only accounts for about 7% of what we actually communicate to other people!
NLP has evolved from studies of human behaviour, studies of our conditioning or programming, and how the way we think governs the results we achieve in life.
The term “Neuro-Linguistic Programming” refers to a stated connection between the neurological processes (“neuro”), language (“linguistic”) and behavioral patterns that have been learned through experience (“programming” or “patterning”) and can be organized to achieve specific goals in life.
Wikipedia goes on to summarise NLP as “a ‘science of excellence’, applied within management training, life coaching, alternative medicine, large group awareness training, and the self-help industry.”
Essentially it has evolved from the study, theories and practical applications of techniques compiled by some very clever people, including: Richard Bandler, John Grinder, Virginia Satir, Fritz Perls and Milton Erickson, to name but a few.
After further studies with George and Nick, I then attained the level of Certified Trainer of Neuro Linguistic Programming and I occasionally run short workshops on an ‘Introduction to NLP and its Practical Application in Sales and Management’.
At George Faddoul’s Sydney course in July 2011, someone said to him that they found it really hard to define NLP when people asked about it.
George Faddoul defined NLP simply as “success coaching”.
I continued my NLP studies with experts Jeff Slayter and Kane Minkus from Hawaii and California, who had been trained in California at the NLP Marin Institute.
Jeff and Kane have really put a lot of work into how to apply NLP in such a way as to make you far more effective in business as well as life.
I completed their Master Coach course, flying regularly to Sydney and Melbourne for six months, which was completely infused with NLP. I continued further studies in their Mastermind Programme in Manley, brainstorming ideas with elite coaches from all over Australia.
I was also very fortunate to study in Sydney under the Director of NLP Marin, Carl Buchheit, who had flown in from California for an intensive weekend workshop training session.
I have also studied much of the work of Coach Tony Robbins, who evolved his own brand of NLP, which he calls ‘Neuro Associative Conditioning’ (NAC).
A lot of NLP and NAC’s roots stem from gestalt therapy and behavioural science.
In addition, I have studied the more tribal, esoteric and ritualistic teachings of the Hawaiian Hunas, firstly with Dr Matthew James, then having spent an intensive week at Byron Bay under the expert guidance of Dr Serge Kahili King from Hawaii. This actually reinforced my contention that many of the Ancient civilisations really studied and understood human behaviour in a very practical way.
In 2007, I traveled to Egypt to further my studies of Egyptology and in 2014 I traveled to see the lands, buildings and culture of the Incas in Peru, the Teotihuacan, the Aztecs and the Maya people of Mexico.
I have been an avid student of human behaviour, success principles and personal development throughout my entire management career and I do realise that success means different things to different people – spiritual harmony is more rewarding than material gains, though there is nothing wrong with achieving both!
That is why I have developed my own system to help my clients to think strategically about change, to develop a workable plan to achieve it, and I back them up with tools, techniques and coaching to follow it through.
I call it simply ‘The Inman System’.
So you’re probably wondering… What can NLP do for me?
One thing is for certain – NLP does work.
In fact it is incredibly powerful and it produces amazing results that can change your life for the better and bring you the success you deserve.
People often find themselves ‘stuck’, either feeling like they are in a rut, or wanting to change their life but not knowing how.
While NLP is an extremely useful tool for a coach to have in his toolbox, it is just one of a number of tools that can enable a coach, like me, Tony Inman, to help you achieve your goals in life and in business.

“As I reached Perth Airport, Sydney-bound for my NLP Masters Course, my taxi driver wished me “Good luck with your flaky course!”, which I feel is because I hadn’t defined it well enough for him. For one thing thing though, he had told me there would be no parking spaces at all in the drop off zone. I said that I knew there would be one, and lo and behold there it was, right where I had visualised it to be!
By the time he’d told me all of his family problems on the way to the airport, I sure knew that this guy could really benefit from an NLP course!”
